More on the actual Riedel tasting in the coming days, but in the meantime a mammoth video (in YouTube terms) of Maximilian Riedel talking about his company, the glasses (and how best to wash them). Filmed in The Cellar Bar & Restaurant in Dublin’s Merrion Hotel.
For those who have IADS (Internet attention deficit syndrome), the following links will skip you through to the different sections of the video direct on YouTube.
- Family and company background
- The wine glass as a messager (3min 15 sec)
- Wine buy Riedel? (8 min 54 sec)
- How to wash them (9min 23 sec)
- The glass design process (10min 05 sec)
Enjoy, and if you’ve any comments fire them in below. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I thoroughly enjoyed the interview. It’s interesting to learn how Riedel goes about designing new glassware for a specific varietal. I would have thought Max’s advice on washing their stemware would be to hand-wash every glass. How refreshing to hear him say the dishwasher is sufficient. And I can tell you the tidbit about having pots & pans in the dishwasher at the same time is correct! I feel I have come away with a better understanding and respect for his company.
Cheers!
Hi Lar,
Brilliant video! What a great location as well! I really enjoy the Riedel tasting in London and am now a believer in just how much difference the glass can make!
This is a link to the video I tookwhere Maximilian explains why the shape of the glass is so critical.
Happy Riedel drinking! Tara
