Wine season is due to kick off in earnest at the end of August with many wine courses reopening their doors for eager students. First up, the very popular “5-in-5“, run by wine journalist, Matthew Nugent (he’s also the author of Mick McCarthy’s Captain Fantastic).

Matthew has been running his “5-in-5″ series from The Hole In The Wall on Dublin’s Blackhorse Avenue for the last few years and they’re usually booked solid.

What’s 5-in-5?

The concept is simple, five grape varieties over 5 nights, with six examples of each grape (i.e. how they can differ based on where and how they’re made) each night along with a light food and easy to follow notes.

The core idea behind them is to make wine drinkers more confident in choosing wines for home or when dining out. There’s no room for the perceived snobbery of wine (and the bullshit).

It’s about learning about wine in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. I hear the end of course nights are now legendary and, of course, there’s the graduation ceremony.

What do you get?

Taste over 30 wines, enjoy wonderful food, easy-to-follow wine notes and of course, the certificate for just €75 (which works out at only €15 a night).
