Vieilles Vignes – just how old is old?

Old vines, “vielles vignes” or “alte reben” is often present on wine labels to denote that the vines from which the wine was made are of a ripe old age. Despite the strict rules which apply to how wine is made, there is still no clear definition of how old is old enough to appear on the label.

I’ve tried most of the Adams family; the girls Semillon, Pinot Gris and Riesling and the boys, Cabernet-Shiraz, The Fergus (a GSM Rhône blend) and now for the Shiraz, available from Tesco (€14.05).
