John McDonnell of Wine Australia is hosting a consumer wine event with John Wilson, wine writer for the Irish Times on Tuesday 24th November in Fallon & Byrne in Dublin.
During the summer John Wilson was given the enviable task of drawing up his selection of favourite Australian wines. The task wasn’t to draw up a list of Australia’s finest wines, but as John says,
“My first criteria for choosing these wines was very simple; would I be happy to share a bottle of any of them with my friends? The answer had to be yes. The list is certainly not a definitive gathering of the greatest wines of Australia, although I have included a fair number of these. It is my personal choice of the best Australian wines I have enjoyed over the last year.”
The task is now complete (with a final count of 70 wines) which covers all styles, regions and prices.
When & Where?
- Tuesday 24th November, 6.30pm – 8.30pm
- The Function Room at Fallon and Byrne, 11-17 Exchequer Street, Dublin 2
Tickets
Tickets cost €20 and are available from ireland@wineaustralia.com or 065 7077264.
Was John free to choose any Australian wines or was he restricted to only those from Producers or Importers who are paid up members of Wine Australia Programme?
Hi David,
Ooooh, a bit of potential juicy controversy. That’s a question for John, I’m afraid.
Lar
Hi David,
I’ll take the pressure off Lar on that one.
No, John was not restricted to programme members wine. The only restriction was that we asked that wines in his selection be available for purchase in Ireland.
So perhaps the title should read “John Wilson’s favourite Australian wines available to buy in Ireland”..but it’s a bit long winded I think you’ll agree.
Hope that helps, and that you can join us on the 24th.
All the best
John

Hi David,
Just wondering if you made it to our tasting with John Wilson? Hope you did. What a cracking night we had. Even Lar made it, and stayed longer than he planned.
70 wines in the line up included Croser Piccadilly Valley Sparkling, Cullen Kevin John Margaret River Chardonnay, Rockford Basked Pressed Barossa Shiraz, Grosset Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling, Tyrrells Hunter Valley Semillon, St Hallett OId Block Barossa Shiraz, Penfolds St Henri, De Bortoli Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, Pewsey Vale Contours Eden Valley Riesling and not one, but two vintages of Penfolds Grange. What a treat, and all for 20 Euro. What a steal!
If you weren’t with us but would like the catalogue, drop me a line (ireland@wineaustralia.com) and I’ll send it to you.
Next event, a Night in the Barossa, tasting and dinner on Australia Day, January 26th.
