Wine of the week: Palo Alta Reserva 2007, Chile
Posted on September 28th, 2009
Saved in Red wine, Sour Grapes recommends, Under €10, Wine

The Palo Alto Reserva is from Chile’s Maule Valley and is a blend of three grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Syrah.
Available from Dunnes Stores, frequently on special offer, this is a real find if you can get it at sale price.
Taste-wise, what’s it like?
Cabernet brings the blackcurrant, Syrah adds a touch of spice and the Carmenere rounds it all off with a great mocha nose and finish. Throw in some vanilla, hints of tobacco and that just about covers it.
Full bodied, very smooth, and round.
A very classy drop.

This is my parents’ “house red”. It is always guaranteed to be lurking somewhere at home when I go back there!
It is genuinely very tasty.
Excellent wine, got it last week in Dunnes for €6.50, rose is also good.
Crikey, €6.50 is a very decent price.
I’ve tried it a few times and just don’t like it. There’s a distinctive green character which is typical of Carmenere that hasn’t properly ripened but could be stalky Cabernet, either of which to me is not a quality sign.
BTW Dunnes overcharge in my view as Sainsbury’s sell it in the north often at ‘£3.99 reduced from £7.99′ while Dunnes is usually an alledged €15 or 16 cut to 7.99 or 7.50 or sometimes it seems 6.50 euro. The tax differences don’t account for the difference.
