Enough of talking the talk. It’s time to get out and try some wine.

Perfect timing too as Håkan Eriksson will be putting a nice selection of wines together for a Rhône valley tasting this Thursday from 6.30pm in Enowine in Dublin’s IFSC.

Rhône can produce fantastic wines and some of the best wines in the world are produced here.

Northern Rhône

The dominant red grapes in the Rhône are Syrah in the north (Hermitage and Côte Rôtie being the most famous names) and Grenache, Mouverdre and Cinsault in the south (think Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas or Vacqueyras). Châteauneuf-du-Pape can have up to 13 grapes in the blend, both red and white

Southern Rhône

The main white grapes from the Rhône are Viognier, Marsanne and Rousanne which are often blended together, a style that is copied by some Australian producers who simply label it VMR.

Viognier is also used together with Syrah in the north, particularly in Côte Rôtie. A small amount of this white grape gives a wonderful silkiness to the wine. Again, you’ll also get cheaper Aussie versions labelld as Shiraz Viognier

So, with all the grapes and styles from north to south, the wines are almost endless but Håkan will be focusing on some of the well known red, full bodied wines.

Prices for the tasting range from €1.10 to €9.75 – reflecting the price of some of the wines on show.

About Enowine machines

Enowine have an “enomatic” tasting system which means they have over 50 wines open for tasting at any one time.
You can taste a load of wines for between 60c and €1.50 a pop. Nice way to try before you buy.
